More Than A Home For The Homeless

Under 1 Roof’s raison d’etre is supporting our members to live independently in the community by providing a framework in which to make positive changes to their lives. We do this by providing a programme of activities, some of which formally support learning around running a tenancy, managing substance misuse or mental wellbeing. Other activities support in the development or rebuilding of soft skills, confidence and self esteem. We constantly develop and evolve the programme to ensure that it is relevant and appropriate for the members of Under 1 Roof. To that end February is shaping up to be one of our busiest months to-date with a number of new sessions starting.

The Tenancy Programme – starts 4th February
The course runs 2 days a week (Mon and Thurs) for 4 weeks, with 1 catch up session each week. This is a national qualification with NOCN and the Chartered Institute of Housing, recognised by Norwich City Council for move on purposes.

The programme offers a range of skills from self assessment of their own readiness to take on a tenancy, to rights and responsibilities, budgeting, maintenance, self care, and trouble shooting problems that may arise. This is supported through a mix of group training and 1:1 coaching sessions to enable the individual to make lasting change to the way they manage their tenancy, their finances and their relationship with their landlord.

Building Better Habits – Wellbeing Toolkit – starts 5th February
The course is held on Tuesday and Friday afternoons for two weeks. The main aim of the group is to look at positive ways of thinking. The group will work together in confidence to build on each others strengths to address various issues such as dealing with anger, managing negative thoughts, building confidence and self esteem.

Pawject – starts 6th February
In Pawject we will be designing and sewing anything from dog beds to cushions to pillows and pet toys like a dog shaped bone pillow. We’ll provide a design catalogue to choose from or participants can design their own. They’ll also get to learn sewing techniques and participate with a new group.

Joy Of Food – starts 8th February
In this 4 week course participants work in a small group from the Joy of Food recipe book and we provide everything needed…even takeaway containers to take home the delights prepared in the session.

Gardening – starts 21st February
Our gardening group starts on the 21st February where we will be joined by the National Trust Head Gardner from the walled garden at Blickling Hall. Planning for the year ahead in the garden is always an exciting time and we’re thrilled to have such expert advice to kickstart the new year.
