More Than A Home For The Homeless

Under 1 Roof’s raison d’etre is supporting our members to live independently in the community by providing a framework in which to make positive changes to their lives. We do this by providing a programme of activities, some of which formally support learning around running a tenancy, managing substance misuse or mental wellbeing. Other activities support in the development or rebuilding of soft skills, confidence and self esteem. We constantly develop and evolve the programme to ensure that it is relevant and appropriate for the members of Under 1 Roof. To that end February is shaping up to be one of our busiest months to-date with a number of new sessions starting.

The Tenancy Programme – starts 4th February
The course runs 2 days a week (Mon and Thurs) for 4 weeks, with 1 catch up session each week. This is a national qualification with NOCN and the Chartered Institute of Housing, recognised by Norwich City Council for move on purposes.

The programme offers a range of skills from self assessment of their own readiness to take on a tenancy, to rights and responsibilities, budgeting, maintenance, self care, and trouble shooting problems that may arise. This is supported through a mix of group training and 1:1 coaching sessions to enable the individual to make lasting change to the way they manage their tenancy, their finances and their relationship with their landlord.

Building Better Habits – Wellbeing Toolkit – starts 5th February
The course is held on Tuesday and Friday afternoons for two weeks. The main aim of the group is to look at positive ways of thinking. The group will work together in confidence to build on each others strengths to address various issues such as dealing with anger, managing negative thoughts, building confidence and self esteem.

Pawject – starts 6th February
In Pawject we will be designing and sewing anything from dog beds to cushions to pillows and pet toys like a dog shaped bone pillow. We’ll provide a design catalogue to choose from or participants can design their own. They’ll also get to learn sewing techniques and participate with a new group.

Joy Of Food – starts 8th February
In this 4 week course participants work in a small group from the Joy of Food recipe book and we provide everything needed…even takeaway containers to take home the delights prepared in the session.

Gardening – starts 21st February
Our gardening group starts on the 21st February where we will be joined by the National Trust Head Gardner from the walled garden at Blickling Hall. Planning for the year ahead in the garden is always an exciting time and we’re thrilled to have such expert advice to kickstart the new year.

We’re back!

Happy New Year! We at Under 1 Roof hope you’ve all had a great Christmas and we look forward to working with you in 2019.
If you’re following us on social media, have joined the Under 1 Roof group or checking our website regularly (If you’re not…then why not?!) you’ll already be aware of what’s going on at Under 1 Roof this New Year.

There are loads of new courses and sessions happening in January, so without further ado, let’s get going!

The Tenancy Programme.

Starting 28th January this 4 week accredited course enables participants to learn how to obtain and run their first independent accommodation or how to avoid pitfalls that led to losing a tenancy in the past.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.

Starting 29th January this 8 week course teaches participants different mindfulness techniques and supports the implementation of these for reducing stress.

Joy Of Food.

This 4 week course starts on the 18th January. Working in a small group from the Joy of Food recipe book we provide everything needed… even takeaway containers to take home the delights prepared in the session.

Scam Awareness Workshop.

We’re partnering with Nat West Bank for this one off workshop on the 31st January, all about being aware of the different ways scam threats may be presented to us. Participants will learn how to identify them and therefore avoid them.

Booking and Further Information.

Places for all of the above must be booked. This can be done by speaking to any of us in the centre or by completing the new on-line booking form (under-1-roof.org.uk/booking).
Further information is available in the same way, if you’ve any other questions then please let us know.

Welcome to the new look Newsletter!

We’ve not only changed how the Newsletter looks but how it’s put together and how we share its content digitally. We hope you like it…..let us know? Want to find out more or get involved? Join our Newsletter group on Thursdays at 11.00am

Whilst we talk of things digital we’re moving things on social media. From the 1st November we will be using the St Martins social media feeds:
Facebook , Twitter and Instagram

On there will be all the bits you’re used to on the U1R feeds plus lots more about St Martins – make sure you’ve liked and followed those by 1st November. We’ll also be setting up a U1R group for you to share in conversations about things relating to U1R so look out for that too.

Also on the 1st November we’re launching our new blog! You can find it on under-1-roof.org.uk and it’s where our Newsletter articles will now be found online…..plus so much more! We’ll be updating the blog regularly and sharing information and articles on there that we think you’ll all be interested in. Got something you want to see on the blog? Then let us know…either through social media, email (u1r@stmartinshousing.org.uk) or the old fashioned way….. and come and see us in the centre.

Opportunity knocks!

For those of you who have some digital skills and feel they could coach others. We’re looking to train up volunteer digital mentors who will then coach others here at U1R or at a number of digital hubs across the city. Let us know if you are interested.
